About John C Sable Memorial Heart Fund, Inc.

The John C Sable Memorial Heart Fund was set up as a memorial to John C Sable who died on November 18, 1949, as a result of a heart attack while serving the Independent Order of Odd Fellows as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the state of New York.  A few dedicated Odd Fellows from Rochester, who held their first organizational meeting on December 20, 1949, conceived the idea.  Early in 1950, the cooperation of the Medical Society of Monroe County was obtained and it was decided that the fund would collect money to be used for fellowships to be granted to deserving young doctors to allow them to do postgraduate study in research of the heart.  

 

On October 3, 1962 the organization became incorporated as the “John C Sable Memorial Heart Fund, Inc.” 

 

During the many years of the fund's existence, 85 grants have been given to doctors studying the heart.  We have no way of measuring the good to mankind accomplished by our work.  We will never know how many lives have been lengthened.  We cannot know or foretell our contribution toward our ultimate goal of eliminating heart disease as the greatest killer of man.  We do know the knowledge gained by our doctors and the reputation of the John C Sable Heart Fund, Inc. has gone around the world.  One of our doctors was one of the pioneers in the use of the pacemaker.  The instrument alone has lengthened a countless number of lives.  One doctor in a New York City hospital was highly publicized for his mobile unit, taking the medical aid to the patients before moving them.  One doctor researched post heart attack therapy.  Another researched laser and interventional cardiology surgery, which involves the removal of plaque from arteries.  

 

Your gifts make this work possible, whether as a memorial gift, a donation in honor of an anniversary or other event, or donation from the Lodge or other organizations.  One hundred percent of your gift, after necessary business expenses, is used for these grants.  All donations are tax deductible and contributions are promptly acknowledged.
